This Footscray pub nails the classics every time.

If you’re a steak aficionado and want some of the best steak in Melbourne, put The Station Hotel in Footscray on your list.
The Station Hotel prides itself for serving up the best steaks in the west, and the Melbourne steakhouse has a loyal fan base for good reason.
STEAKS FOR EVERY APPETITE
Using locally sourced produce and infusing a French-inspired touch through their menu, the iconic Footscray pub on Napier St showcases grain fed, grass fed and dry aged options in equal measure. The 250g O’Connor Rostbiff and 300g O’Connor Porterhouse are more modest but satisfying serves, while the 1.4kg Rangers Valley Black Onyx Tomahawk is the drawcard for huge appetites. Still need something extra? Add caviar or Moreton bay bugs.
A selection of decadent sauces including red wine or truffle jus, garlic or mushroom are available, and all steaks are served with The Station Hotel’s signature béarnaise and peppercorn. Seasoned fries and a house salad with a well-balanced acidic pickled radish round out the Melbourne steak restaurant’s go-to offerings.
PUB CLASSICS DONE RIGHT
That said, this Footscray pub is by no means a one trick pony. Beer battered rockling and chips, juicy burgers, and pan fried calamari aim to please those who are after pub classics. Other large plates like the pan roasted barramundi and confit fennel are equally delicious. Diners with additional dietary preferences will also enjoy a great variety including warm and cold salads, mushroom risotto and beetroot tartare and a surprisingly ample pumpkin burger.
The subtle French-inspired touches work their way across the menu by way of smatterings of gruyere and sauces you’ll want more of. While the Footscray restaurant sticks to the French-infused brief, you will therefore notice the absence of a traditional pasta or pizza option found in many modern Melbourne gastropub menus across, unless it’s a bolognese in the kids section. This may well be forgiven, if you tuck into a side serve of the mac and cheese gratin sinfully adorned with bacon and crackling. Speaking of little ones, the cheeseburger and chips is a definite pleaser. What’s not to love about a juicy premium beef patty and fluffy milk bun?
The Footcray steak restaurant’s menu does adjust seasonally, so new favourites are often discovered and can always be enjoyed with a well-considered range of Australian wines and cocktails – perhaps in the beer garden if warm weather beckons.

Final Verdict
The Station Hotel Footscray is a real gem of the inner west and constantly nails the unbeatable combination of delicious food and fantastic service, and we continue to return for the team’s hospitality. The team are attentive, warm and friendly; and happy to answer any question you’ve got about the menu.
Handy to note: Festive dining specials around Christmas and other occasions like Mother’s/Father’s Day book out early, so be organised and book online. It’s also the only pub in the Footscray/inner west to boast a petting zoo on Sundays!
