Whether you’re exploring new flavours or a Vietnamese cuisine aficionado, put this on your must try list.
It’s no secret that Vietnamese restaurants are plentiful across Melbourne’s western suburbs. So it’s definitely noteworthy when one stands out from the rest, and Braybrook’s Blue Bamboo Vietnamese Restaurant and Cafe gets a big tick from the Foodies team.
To begin with, Blue Bamboo hits the spot in setting the scene for a memorable meal. Step through the doors to the courtyard and you will easily forget you’re in Braybrook. Instead, be transported to what feels like a tropical getaway in quaint Hoi An or Danang. The garden dining area is thick with lush greenery, a fish pond, art and wooden dining booths that are a very welcome change from many eateries that can lack a unique atmosphere.
The food? Absolutely delicious.
The popular Vietnamese restaurant in Melbourne’s west has many popular dishes and these are just a glimpse. The tofu fried rice is a savoury standout, featuring fluffy grains that are fragrant, with tofu that is firm and cooked well without ending up rubbery. The dish is also far from greasy examples of what can go wrong with the popular Asian dish. Blue Bamboo also serves up a terrific fried calamari with a crisp exterior and is perfectly tender inside, served with a zesty dipping sauce. For something green, the Chinese broccoli is perfectly cooked—fresh, crisp, and infused with garlic and soy sauce. And whatever you do, don’t skip the vegetarian spring rolls that are wonderfully golden, crunchy, and bursting with flavour.

Equally important is Blue Bamboo’s service that is fast, friendly, and fuss-free. You’ll barely have time to admire the decor before your food arrives piping hot. While very efficient, expect limited English from staff who are very friendly, but may have trouble answering any questions you may have about the huge menu – but at least the dishes are numbered, which makes it a bit easier to order. Their roast duck and soft shell crab are also popular. Above all, you can hardly say you’re not spoilt for choice!
